Ingredients

Scale

Lasagna Noodles

  • Quality wide lasagna pasta sheets, enough for layering (about 12 sheets)

Meat Sauce

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups tomato sauce (store-bought or homemade, well-seasoned)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Béchamel Sauce

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • Salt, pepper to taste
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg

Cheeses

  • 12 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh Herbs

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: Brown the ground beef and pork in a large pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic, cooking until translucent. Pour in the tomato sauce, season with salt and pepper, and let simmer gently for 20-30 minutes to develop rich flavors.
  2. Make the Béchamel Sauce: In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to create a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes without browning. Gradually add milk while whisking continuously until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir well and remove from heat.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the lasagna sheets and cook until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and lay noodles flat on a clean kitchen towel or baking sheet to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Layers: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce. Arrange a layer of noodles on top, followed by a spread of béchamel sauce and a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Repeat layers, finishing with a generous topping of mozzarella and Parmesan for a golden crust.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes to allow the cheese to brown beautifully. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving to allow the layers to set.

Notes

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients like fresh herbs, cheese, and pasta for the best flavor and texture.
  • Do not overload the sauce to avoid soggy noodles; spread sauces evenly.
  • Alternate meat sauce, béchamel, and cheese layers for balanced flavors.
  • Allow the lasagna to rest before slicing to help it hold its shape.
  • Customize your cheese blend with provolone or fontina for added depth.
