Sausage Hashbrown Bites

Sausage Hashbrown Bites are crispy, savory, and satisfying snacks combining seasoned ground sausage with golden, crispy hashbrowns and melted cheese. Perfect as a quick snack, party appetizer, or grab-and-go treat, these bite-sized morsels deliver bold flavors and a crunchy texture with simple pantry ingredients. They can be baked or fried to perfection, making them versatile and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen shredded or diced hashbrowns, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 1 pound ground sausage (spicy, mild, or herb-infused)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, mozzarella, or preferred variety)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground sausage by breaking it apart and cooking until fully done and slightly crispy. Drain any excess fat to avoid soggy bites.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage, thawed and dried hashbrowns, shredded cheese, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to ensure even flavor and texture in every bite.
  3. Form Bite-Sized Balls: Scoop out small portions of the mixture, about one to two tablespoons each, and roll them into compact balls, pressing firmly so they hold their shape during cooking.
  4. Cook the Bites: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the bites on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through for even browning. Alternatively, fry in hot oil (~350°F) until golden and crispy, turning to brown evenly on all sides.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the cooked bites and let them cool slightly on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Use dry hashbrowns by thawing and squeezing out extra moisture to prevent sogginess and ensure maximum crispiness.
  • Keep bites small for even cooking and to prevent them from falling apart.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste before cooking for balanced flavor.
  • If frying, maintain oil temperature around 350°F to avoid greasy results.
  • Drain cooked bites on a cooling rack rather than paper towels to keep them crisp longer.
