Roasted Figs

Roasted Figs

Roasted figs offer a naturally indulgent and sophisticated sweet treat by caramelizing ripe but firm fresh figs with olive oil and optional honey or maple syrup. This quick and versatile recipe highlights the luscious texture and rich sweetness of figs, perfect for dessert, snacks, or pairing with cheeses and nuts.

Ingredients

Scale

Figs and Seasoning

  • 810 fresh ripe but firm figs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Pinch of sea salt

Optional Sweeteners

  • 12 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (maple syrup for vegan option)

Herbs

  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Oven: Begin by setting your oven to 400°F (200°C). This temperature is ideal for caramelizing the figs quickly without drying them out.
  2. Prepare the Figs: Rinse your fresh figs and gently pat them dry. Slice each fig in half lengthwise to expose the juicy interior, which will roast beautifully.
  3. Arrange and Season: Place the fig halves in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle olive oil over them, followed by honey or maple syrup if you like, sprinkle with fresh thyme or rosemary leaves, and finish with a light dusting of sea salt.
  4. Roast the Figs: Pop the figs into the oven and roast for about 15-20 minutes. You want them tender and caramelized on top but still holding their shape. Keep an eye on them so they don’t overcook.
  5. Serve Warm: Once roasted, serve the figs warm. They’re fantastic on their own or incorporated into salads, yogurt bowls, or cheese platters.

Notes

  • Choose fresh, firm figs to prevent them from turning mushy during roasting.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; provide enough space for figs to caramelize evenly without steaming.
  • Experiment with herbs like rosemary, thyme, or mint for varied flavor profiles.
  • A drizzle of lemon juice after roasting brightens and balances the flavors.
  • Monitor oven time closely and check figs around 15 minutes to avoid burning.
