Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf Base

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Vegetables

  • 1 cup sliced bell peppers
  • 1 cup sliced onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Cheese

  • 6 to 8 slices provolone cheese

Optional for Variations

  • Jalapeños or cayenne pepper for spice
  • Mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss cheese as cheese alternatives
  • Mushrooms, spinach, or zucchini for extra veggies
  • Lentils or plant-based meat substitutes for vegetarian version
  • Gluten-free crumbs or crushed nuts instead of regular breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Veggies: Sauté sliced bell peppers, onions, and minced garlic in a bit of olive oil over medium heat until tender and caramelized. This step builds the authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor base for the meatloaf.
  2. Mix the Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, sautéed veggies, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly but gently to keep the meatloaf tender and ensure even distribution of ingredients.
  3. Shape and Layer the Meatloaf: On a baking sheet or in a loaf pan, shape half of the meat mixture into a loaf. Layer provolone cheese slices evenly over the top. Cover with the remaining meat mixture, sealing the edges well to encase the cheese inside.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Bake the meatloaf in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). After baking, let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing to retain juices and ensure moist, flavorful servings.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to avoid a dense meatloaf.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check doneness and avoid drying out.
  • Rest the meatloaf before slicing to allow juices to redistribute.
  • Thoroughly sauté veggies for rich caramelized flavors.
  • Customize the cheese layering to add more cheesiness or mix cheeses for complexity.
