Ingredients

Scale

Protein Choice

  • 1 lb ground beef, chicken breasts, sausage, or plant-based protein (tofu, chickpeas, etc.)

Vegetables

  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian herbs (dried oregano, basil, thyme mix)

Fat Source

  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil

Optional Extras

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • Jalapeños, cayenne pepper, or hot sauce to taste
  • Fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Wash and chop all vegetables into uniform bite-sized pieces for even cooking. If using meat, cut into chunks or crumble ground meat for consistent size within the pack.
  2. Assemble the foil packs: Lay out large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil. On each sheet, place an even layer of your chosen protein, followed by the chopped vegetables. Season generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian herbs. Drizzle olive oil or add a pat of butter to promote tender, juicy results. Add optional extras like cheese or mushrooms if desired.
  3. Seal the packs tightly: Fold the foil over the ingredients and crimp the edges securely to trap steam inside. Make sure no gaps remain to avoid improper steaming.
  4. Cook the foil packs: Place the foil packs on a preheated grill or in an oven heated to 400°F (200°C). Cook for 25-30 minutes, or until vegetables are tender and meat reaches a safe internal temperature. For campfire cooking, position packs near hot coals and check regularly.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Carefully open the foil away from your face to avoid steam burns. Serve directly from the pack or transfer contents to plates. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • Use heavy-duty foil sheets to prevent tearing and leaking.
  • Cut vegetables into small, uniform pieces for faster and even cooking.
  • Do not overfill the foil packs; leave some space for steam circulation.
  • Double wrap the packs for extra durability when cooking over campfires.
  • Let packs rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow flavors to meld.
