Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 45 medium russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 23 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup

Seasonings & Others

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (for sautéing)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Optional herbs/spices (e.g., parsley, chili powder, jalapeños)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds to ensure they cook evenly. Parboil by boiling or microwaving the slices briefly to make them tender for faster baking.
  2. Cook the beef and vegetables: In a large skillet, heat butter or oil and sauté chopped onions and minced garlic until fragrant and translucent. Add ground beef, breaking it up as it browns. Season with salt, pepper, and any desired herbs or spices until fully cooked.
  3. Assemble the casserole: Grease a baking dish. Layer half of the potato slices on the bottom, then spread the cooked beef mixture evenly on top. Spread half of the cream of mushroom soup over the beef, followed by the remaining potato slices. Pour the remaining soup on top and sprinkle generously with shredded cheese.
  4. Bake to perfection: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 15 minutes to allow the cheese to brown and the potatoes to finish cooking.

Notes

  • Cut potatoes thinly for even cooking and better sauce absorption.
  • Parboiling potatoes helps ensure they cook through without being raw in the center.
  • Use sharp cheddar or aged cheese for deeper flavor.
  • Layer ingredients evenly for balanced bites in every serving.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow easier slicing.
