Easy Pizza Roses

Easy Pizza Roses are a visually stunning and delicious appetizer that transforms simple pizza dough and classic toppings into beautiful rose-shaped bites. Perfect for parties, snacks, or family dinners, these elegant yet effortless treats can be customized with your favorite toppings and are ready in under an hour.

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • Pizza dough (store-bought or homemade) – enough for one rectangular sheet about 12×10 inches
  • Marinara sauce – about 1/2 cup
  • Mozzarella cheese slices – approximately 8 oz
  • Pepperoni slices – 20-25 slices (optional, substitute for vegetarian)
  • Olive oil – 2 tablespoons for brushing
  • Italian seasoning – 1 teaspoon for sprinkling
  • Fresh basil leaves – a handful for garnish (optional)

Optional Variations

  • Sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives (for vegetarian option)
  • Cheese mix: mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan (for extra flavor)
  • Gluten-free pizza dough (for gluten-free option)
  • Rosemary or thyme – 1 teaspoon, mixed into dough or sprinkled on top (for herb-infused variation)
  • Red pepper flakes or spicy sausage slices (for spicy version)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Dough: Roll out your pizza dough into a thin, even rectangle on a lightly floured surface. If using store-bought dough, follow package instructions for resting and warming it up to ensure it’s easy to shape and won’t tear when rolling.
  2. Assemble the Strips: Spread a thin, even layer of marinara sauce over the dough rectangle. Lay mozzarella cheese slices along one edge, then place pepperoni slices overlapping slightly on top of the cheese to create the rose “petals.”
  3. Cut the Dough into Strips: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough into strips about 2 inches wide. These will be rolled to form individual roses.
  4. Roll Up the Strips: Carefully roll each strip from the side with cheese and pepperoni to form a rose shape with visible layers. Imperfections add a charming rustic look.
  5. Arrange and Bake: Place each rolled rose upright in a greased muffin tin or on a lined baking sheet. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  6. Add Final Touches: Allow the roses to cool slightly before removing them from the pan. Garnish with fresh basil leaves or extra cheese if desired and serve warm for the best flavor.

Notes

  • Use cold dough for easier slicing and shaping without sticking.
  • Do not overload with toppings to ensure easier rolling and even baking.
  • Cut strips evenly about 2 inches wide for uniform baking.
  • Grease the muffin tin well to prevent sticking.
  • Watch the oven carefully as baking times can vary; remove once edges are golden brown.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in oven to keep crust crispy.
  • Freeze unbaked roses on a sheet until firm, then transfer to freezer bags. Bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes.
  • Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes; avoid microwaving to prevent sogginess.
