Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices ham (about 4 oz)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (about 4 oz)

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Flatten the chicken breasts using a meat mallet until they are about 1/4 inch thick to ensure even cooking and easier rolling.
  2. Assemble and Roll: Lay one slice of ham and one slice of Swiss cheese over each flattened chicken breast, then roll tightly and secure with toothpicks if needed to keep the filling inside.
  3. Brown the Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Brown chicken rolls on all sides for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown to lock in flavor and texture.
  4. Make the Creamy Sauce: Remove chicken from skillet and set aside. In the same pan, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter, whisk in flour to form a roux. Gradually add heavy cream while whisking constantly until the sauce thickens. Stir in minced garlic and Dijon mustard, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Simmer and Serve: Return the chicken rolls to the pan, spoon sauce over them, cover, and simmer gently for 7–10 minutes until chicken is cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F/74°C) and cheese inside is melted. Serve hot, garnished as desired.

Notes

  • Flatten chicken evenly to prevent undercooked spots.
  • Secure rolls well with toothpicks or kitchen twine.
  • Whisk cream continuously to avoid lumps and achieve silky sauce.
  • Check doneness with a meat thermometer for safe eating.
  • Allow chicken to rest a few minutes after cooking for juicier bites.
