Ingredients

Scale

Chicken & Meat

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices of sliced ham

Cheeses & Dairy

  • 6 oz Swiss cheese, sliced
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Seasonings & Condiments

  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Toppings & Fats

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Trim any excess fat from the boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Lightly pound each breast to an even thickness to ensure uniform cooking. Season both sides generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to create a flavorful base.
  2. Sear the Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil or butter. Sear the chicken breasts for 3-4 minutes per side until they develop a golden brown crust but are not fully cooked through, as they will finish cooking in the oven.
  3. Assemble the Bake: Grease a baking dish. Place the seared chicken breasts in the dish, then layer each breast with one slice of ham and Swiss cheese. Set the dish aside while you prepare the sauce.
  4. Make the Creamy Sauce: In the same skillet, melt the cream cheese over low heat. Slowly add the heavy cream and Dijon mustard, stirring continuously until smooth and creamy. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and additional garlic powder to taste. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken and ham layers in the baking dish.
  5. Add Topping and Bake: In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the grated Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture generously over the top of the dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly, the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F), and the breadcrumb topping is golden and crisp.

Notes

  • Even Cooking: Pound the chicken breasts evenly to avoid dryness and ensure all pieces cook uniformly.
  • Use Fresh Cheese: Freshly grated Swiss and Parmesan cheese melt better and offer superior flavor compared to pre-shredded varieties.
  • Don’t Skip Searing: Searing adds essential flavor and color that baking alone can’t achieve.
  • Layer Wisely: Distribute ham and cheese evenly across the chicken breasts to balance creaminess and savoriness in every bite.
  • Watch Your Bake Time: Avoid overbaking to keep the chicken juicy. Check the internal temperature for doneness.
