Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)

Cheese Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk or cream
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar or Gruyère cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Wash and peel your potatoes, then slice them evenly into thin rounds, about 1/8-inch thick, ensuring consistent cooking throughout.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, whisk in flour to form a roux, then slowly add milk or cream while whisking constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese until smooth, then add minced garlic and chopped onion. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Layer the Dish: Grease your baking dish and arrange a layer of potato slices evenly. Pour some cheese sauce over them, then repeat layering until all potatoes and sauce are used, finishing with cheese sauce on top.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes to brown the top and get those irresistible crispy edges.
  5. Rest Before Serving: Let the dish cool slightly after baking to allow the sauce to set, making it easier to serve and enjoy every cheesy, creamy mouthful.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato slices to ensure even cooking.
  • Bake at a moderate temperature for best texture and to prevent drying out the sauce.
  • Choose sharp cheddar or Gruyère cheese for a rich, tangy flavor.
  • Season each layer lightly with salt and pepper to balance flavors.
  • Allow the dish to rest after baking to thicken the sauce and meld flavors.
