Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Filling and Topping

  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded or cut into sticks
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy, indicating the yeast is activated. Gradually add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture and mix until a soft but not sticky dough forms.
  2. Let the Dough Rise: Cover the dough with a clean cloth and place it in a warm spot. Allow it to rise until it doubles in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours, to ensure light and fluffy breadsticks.
  3. Shape and Stuff the Breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough gently, then roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle. Cut the dough into strips, place a generous amount of mozzarella cheese along the center of each strip, and carefully fold or roll the dough around the cheese, sealing the edges tightly to prevent leakage during baking.
  4. Add Seasoning and Prepare to Bake: Arrange the stuffed dough strips on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops lightly with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to create a flavorful and golden crust.
  5. Bake Until Golden and Gooey: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the breadsticks for 15-20 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly. Serve warm for the best cheesy experience.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast and check its expiration for a good rise and fluffy dough.
  • Seal the edges of the breadsticks firmly to prevent cheese from leaking while baking.
  • Avoid overloading the breadsticks with cheese to prevent sogginess.
  • Brush generously with butter mixed with garlic and herbs for enhanced flavor and shine.
  • Serve the breadsticks warm, straight from the oven, for optimal taste and texture.
