Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry Base

  • Puff pastry sheets (1 package, thawed)

Cheese Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Topping

  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheets according to the package instructions until they are pliable but still cold to preserve the flaky layers during baking.
  2. Make the Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and optional lemon zest. Stir the mixture until it is smooth and well blended to create the creamy filling.
  3. Assemble the Danish: Cut the puff pastry into squares or rectangles. Spoon a generous dollop of cheese filling into the center of each piece. Fold the edges of the pastry over the filling and pinch lightly to seal, forming the classic Danish shape.
  4. Add Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the tops of the assembled pastries with the beaten egg yolk to give a glossy, golden finish. Place them on a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until puffed and browned.
  5. Cool and Enjoy: Let the Cheese Danish cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to allow the filling to set perfectly and maintain a flaky crust.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold but pliable to avoid tearing during assembly.
  • Soften the cream cheese fully to achieve a smooth filling without lumps.
  • Do not overfill the pastries to prevent the cheese filling from leaking during baking.
  • Brush the egg wash gently and evenly for a glossy golden finish without pooling.
  • Monitor baking time closely and remove pastries once golden to preserve the flaky texture.
